Jixue Yang is a pianist, educator, and chamber musician with a distinguished career spanning performance, teaching, and contemporary music collaborations. Currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts at the Manhattan School of Music, Jixue has developed a reputation for excellence in both classical and contemporary piano performance. With a background that includes a Master of Music in Contemporary Performance and a Bachelor of Music in Classical Piano Performance from the Manhattan School of Music, Jixue combines technical mastery with an innovative approach to interpretation and teaching.
An advocate for new music, Jixue has worked extensively with composers to premiere and record new works. As a founding member of Apply Triangle, an electroacoustic trio based in New York City, Jixue has pushed the boundaries of contemporary chamber music through multimedia collaborations that integrate live electronics, video projection, and lighting elements. Previous collaborations include performances with ensembles such as Ensemble BlackBox and Infrasound Ensemble, both of which focus on experimental and socially engaged music.
Jixue has performed at some of the most prestigious venues and festivals worldwide, including the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Leipzig, the Tage der elektroakustischen Musik in Magdeburg, the Nief-Norf Summer Festival, and the Cortona Sessions for New Music. Recent performance highlights include recitals at Riverside Church in New York City, Akoesticum in the Netherlands, and Marc A. Scorca Hall at Opera America. International competition successes include top prizes at the Singapore International Music Competition, the Charleston International Music Competition, and the AD LIBITUM Piano Competition.
Dedicated to music education, Jixue has taught at institutions such as Manhattan School of Music, Columbia University, and Bowling Green State University, providing instruction in piano literature, extended techniques, and contemporary music practices. As a faculty member at Opus One Music School in New York and an associate piano teacher at Steinway & Sons, Jixue is committed to mentoring students of all levels and backgrounds. Teaching engagements have also included guest lectures at the University of Florida and Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar, where discussions have explored topics such as modern mathematics in contemporary music, aleatory music, and the influence of Carl Gustav Jung on musical interpretation.
Beyond performance and teaching, Jixue has contributed to numerous recording projects, including the electroacoustic album Oxalis Triangularis, which features 33 newly commissioned works created during the COVID-19 pandemic. The album, released under Cmntx Records, showcases collaborations with international composers who specialize in electronic and contemporary classical music. This project reflects Jixue’s commitment to expanding the possibilities of piano performance through innovative programming and global collaboration.
In addition to solo and ensemble performances, Jixue has served as a juror for the Pacific Stars International Piano Competition and has been recognized with fellowships from Chamber Music America and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. As a passionate educator, performer, and advocate for contemporary music, Jixue continues to shape the future of piano performance through a dedication to artistic excellence, interdisciplinary exploration, and community engagement.
